A Yakima County, WA, dairy worker has died after contracting highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) following exposure to infected cattle.

The Yakima Health District said the worker had underlying health conditions and was hospitalized with a severe HPAI infection. Officials also confirmed the county’s third human case in a resident exposed to infected dairy cattle. That person has not become seriously ill or needed hospitalization.

In Colorado, routine bulk milk testing detected HPAI at a Weld County dairy on Oct. 24, marking the state’s first dairy detection since August 2024. The herd is under quarantine. Health officials say the risk to the general public remains low.

USDA reported 48 HPAI cases in cattle in the last 30 days as of Nov. 4.
