In early October, USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza in two Washington dairy herds, marking the state’s first livestock detections.
Testing followed signs of illness in cattle, despite the herds’ history of negative results through the National Milk Testing Strategy. APHIS is asking dairy producers to tighten biosecurity measures and contact their state veterinarian right away if livestock become sick or they notice unusual wildlife deaths.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said pasteurized milk remains safe, and it diverts or destroys milk from affected animals.
USDA livestock data show 122 confirmed herd detections nationwide as of Oct. 27, including additional cases reported after Washington’s initial announcement.
