Christian Food Pantry, Valparaiso, Indiana.

USDA plans to purchase up to $472.5 million in domestically produced food for food banks and other nutrition assistance programs.

The planned purchases include $165.5 million in dairy products, $41 million in pork and $20 million each in chicken and farm-raised catfish. Other purchases will include rice, legumes, fruit, nuts and Pacific whiting. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said the purchases will support American producers while providing food to people in need.

USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service will buy the products for distribution through charitable organizations and federal nutrition assistance programs.
