Truck crash sends livestock scattering

New legislation was introduced last week in the U.S. Senate by Sens. John Hoeven (R-ND) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) to reform rules regarding electronic logging devices and hours of service for commercial truck drivers hauling livestock. Pictured is one of Mark Yazel’s cattle trucks. Yazel

Dozens of cattle scattered through downtown Kansas City, MO, early Oct. 18 after a cattle hauler plunged from a highway overpass and landed on a car below.

According to the Associated Press, the truck was carrying 120 to 130 cattle when it overturned on Interstate 70 and fell onto southbound I-35 shortly before 3 a.m. Authorities estimated that 45-60 cattle were killed in the crash, while dozens escaped, causing additional accidents and prompting calls from motorists. Some cattle wandered several miles before being captured. Police used drones to locate the animals before crews on horseback arrived to help round them up.

Both the truck driver and the motorist whose car was struck suffered minor injuries and were treated at local hospitals following the crash.
