The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service developed an environmental assessment to implement a new joint herd management area plan for the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range in southeastern Montana and northern Wyoming.

The plan addresses prior federal court mandates to reevaluate appropriate management levels, and sets a new appropriate management level of 90-120 horses.

“This population range is designed to balance the herd’s needs with available water, vegetation, and wildlife habitat, preventing long-term land deterioration,” BLM said.

The agency received extensive public comment on a preliminary environmental assessment in the spring of 2023, and the final draft of the document includes comments and noteworthy changes. All documents may be accessed at tinyurl.com/52j34xjw.
