Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed Senate Bill 25-053, Protect Wild Bison, into law on May 22.

The bill classifies bison as big game unless the bison are livestock, making the hunting or taking of the species illegal unless authorized by the parks and wildlife commission. Violation of the law will result in a fine of $10,000.

“These new laws will provide us better tools to protect these iconic Colorado animals,” Polis said. “Let’s ensure that wild horses and bison will remain symbols of Colorado’s strong, healthy, and wild future, not just our past.”
