CDFW releases quarterly wolf update

The gray wolf is still protected in western Oregon

USFWS

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) released its second-quarter Wolf Management Update, showing the state continues to recognize 12 wolf packs as the population expands.

Five packs, the Ashpan, Harvey, Lassen, Whitehorse and Whaleback packs, produced at least 25 pups this year. CDFW said the Yowlumni Pack in Tulare County has not been detected since the beginning of 2026 and could lose its status as an active pack if it is not found by the end of September.

During the quarter, CDFW investigated 49 reported livestock depredations; wolf attacks caused 10, and CDFW determined wolves probably caused another six. CDFW paid producers $107,661 for eligible losses and awarded another $1.9 million to four partner organizations to support compensation, outreach, training and equipment aimed at reducing wolf-livestock conflicts.
