California is investing $2 million to help livestock producers reduce conflicts with expanding gray wolf populations while supporting wolf recovery.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife awarded grants to four organizations through its Wolf-Livestock Compensation Program.
The California Bountiful Foundation will reimburse producers for confirmed or probable wolf losses while providing outreach, education and equipment. The Sierra Valley Resource Conservation District will assist ranchers with hazing techniques, detection tools and research into electronic cattle ear tags that could identify unusual herd behavior linked to wolf activity. The Honey Lake Valley Resource Conservation District will offer technical assistance and deterrent equipment, while Working Circle will provide workshops and ranch-specific guidance on herd management practices to reduce the risk of livestock depredation.
