The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began an 11-day gather operation Sept. 19 in and around the Sand Wash Basin Herd Management Area (HMA) in northwest Colorado.
The HMA is estimated to sustainably support 163-362 horses, but BLM estimated the total population at 505 horses.
A total of 300 horses were planned for gather, with about 245 horses to be removed from the range and 55 to be returned to the HMA, of which 22 were to be treated with fertility control treatment.
As of Sept. 22, a total of 138 horses had been gathered.
