Agri Star resumes production after fire

Winneshiek County Emergency Management

Agri Star Meat and Poultry resumed limited production during the week of Aug. 17 following a fire at its Postville, IA, processing plant.

The company said on Facebook that employees and contractors cleaned and repaired parts of the facility before production resumed. “Although we still have a great deal of work ahead of us—and rebuilding will take time—bringing members of our team back through the doors and beginning production again represents an important and hopeful milestone,” Agri Star said.

The plant employs about 600 people and processes kosher meat.

Local media outlet KCRG previously reported that the July fire destroyed about 75% of the facility. Postville Fire Chief Jeff Bohr said investigators determined the fire was accidental and likely began in the plant’s laundry room.
