A fire that broke out at the Agri Star Meat & Poultry processing plant in Postville, IA, on July 28 drew firefighters and emergency responders from multiple communities as crews worked throughout the day to contain the blaze at one of the nation’s largest kosher meat-processing facilities.
In an initial statement posted on the company’s Facebook page, Agri Star confirmed that emergency crews had been on site since early that morning.
“A fire is currently active at our facility in Postville, Iowa,” the company said. “The safety of our team members, emergency responders, and the surrounding community remains our highest priority.”
The fire also affected the surrounding community. The city of Postville issued a water conservation notice asking residents to use water only for essential needs while firefighters battled the blaze. Later in the day, city officials also warned that smoke from the fire could affect air quality. Residents, particularly older adults, young children and people with respiratory or other medical conditions, were encouraged to keep windows and doors closed and limit outdoor activity when possible.
On July 29, Agri Star thanked first responders, employees and the community for their support during the emergency.
“First and foremost, we thank the firefighters, law enforcement, EMS personnel, emergency management officials, utility crews, and all first responders who worked tirelessly and selflessly to protect lives and contain the fire,” the company wrote. “Their professionalism, courage, and dedication have been extraordinary.”
The company also expressed appreciation to its employees and the Postville community for their patience, encouragement and offers of assistance while officials begin assessing the damage and determining next steps.
Agri Star said its immediate focus remains on the safety of employees, emergency responders and the community as it works with local, state and federal officials to evaluate the situation. Company officials acknowledged there are many questions about future operations but said they would release verified information as it becomes available.
According to COLlive, an independent Orthodox Jewish news outlet, Agri Star is one of the largest kosher meat-processing companies. The Postville facility was acquired by businessman Hershey Friedman in 2009 after previous operator Agriprocessors filed for bankruptcy.
The plant has experienced other incidents in recent years. DTN reported that a fire in the facility’s boiler room in May 2026 was contained to that area. In February 2021, two workers were injured in a propane explosion at the plant. — Charles Wallace, WLJ contributing editor
