Iowa declared free of pseudorabies outbreak

Kansas State University Research and Extension

Iowa has successfully contained and eradicated a recent pseudorabies outbreak after completing the response protocol established by USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

State Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig said follow-up testing found no additional cases, confirming the virus did not spread beyond the original infected swine facility identified in April. Fewer than 10 farms were placed under quarantine, and all have since tested negative and been released, allowing normal livestock movement to resume. Iowa also retains its pseudorabies-free trade status under USDA standards.

Officials emphasized the response highlights the importance of strong disease preparedness. Pseudorabies pose no risk to human health, and properly prepared pork remains safe to eat.
