USDA awards grants to address veterinary shortage

A veterinarian performs a breeding soundness exam on a bull. Bull soundness exams can help detect and correct problems before breeding season begins.

USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture has awarded $8.2 million through its Veterinary Services Grant Program to help address food-animal veterinary shortages in rural communities.

The funding includes 34 grants supporting veterinary clinics, education and training programs. Sixteen Education, Extension and Training grants will help veterinarians, veterinary students and technicians develop specialized skills through accredited veterinary schools and professional organizations. Another 18 Rural Practice Enhancement grants will provide up to $200,000 each to buy equipment, support staffing and improve veterinary services in designated shortage areas.

The program aims to strengthen veterinary care for livestock producers in underserved rural communities. A complete list of grant recipients is available at tinyurl.com/yjwm37xh.
