USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announced a $17.6 million investment into research to protect the health and welfare of agricultural animals.

“Protecting the health and welfare of agricultural animals is integral to ensuring a safe, sustainable, resilient and ethically-sound food system,” said NIFA Director Dr. Manjit Misra.

Projects include research into highly pathogenic avian influenza and African swine fever. A total of $12.7 million will go to 27 projects funded through NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative’s Diseases of Agricultural Animals program, while the remaining $4.8 million will go to 10 projects in the Welfare of Agricultural Animals program.
