Legal Ledger Brief: Updates on wolf activity

Two gray wolves were captured on film in northwest Colorado, recorded by a trail camera set up by Defenders of Wildlife.

Voters in Colorado recently voted to introduce gray wolves in the state by 2023, although they have been sighted in the state off and on. It has also been confirmed wolves in California and Oregon have made several depredations on livestock.

In Oregon, between July and November, a total of 18 livestock kills have been confirmed. Other investigated incidences were either reported as possible wolf kills, or killed by something else.

In California, three incidents have been reported since late October. Two of the suspected depredations were recorded as “unknown” after it could not be determined whether a cow and calf were killed during calving or scavenged after dying. However, a Lassen Pack wolf was confirmed to have killed a cow and newborn calf in Lassen County.
