The Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) and others sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on July 1 over concentrated animal feeding operations’ (CAFO’s) pollution-reporting exemptions.
This lawsuit follows the exemptions passed by EPA on June 4 amending the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act.
The lawsuit seeks that “industrial-scale” livestock operations report their ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions, which often emit from manure lagoons.
The groups claim in the lawsuit that, “Exposure to ammonia and hydrogen sulfide released from the highly concentrated animal waste produced by factory farms can cause many human health problems, including respiratory diseases, nasal and eye irritation, headaches, nausea and even death.”
The lawsuit was filed by a total of 11 environmental groups.
