The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization for Credelio CAT, marking the first FDA-authorized drug to treat New World screwworm (NWS) infestations in cats and kittens.
The FDA determined that available scientific evidence shows the product may be effective and that its benefits outweigh potential risks. Most U.S. cats face low NWS risk due to geography, but outdoor cats near the U.S.-Mexico border or those that have traveled to affected countries face higher exposure.
Credelio CAT is available only by prescription because veterinary oversight is required. Its active ingredient, lotilaner, is generally safe but has been linked to rare neurologic reactions, underscoring the need for veterinary consultation.
