Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) secured a deal with the B.C. Ministry of Water, Lands and Resource Stewardship for the Canadian province to provide an additional 15 wolves to the state.
The wolves will be captured and translocated between December and March 2024. The Colorado wildlife agency plans to release 10-15 wolves on the Western Slope over the course of three to five years, with this year being the second. The announcement comes following the relocation of the Copper Creek wolf pack after continued livestock depredations.
“We learned a great deal from last year’s successful capture and transport efforts and will apply those lessons this year as we work to establish a self-sustaining wolf population in Colorado,” said CPW Wolf Conservation Program Manager Eric Odell.
CPW also recently announced the Non-lethal Wolf Conflict Reduction Grant Program, which allows eligible organizations to apply for funds to coordinate with producers to implement non-lethal conflict reduction measures. To apply, visit tinyurl.com/4469vssu.
