The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is moving forward with its new movement reporting requirements for goats, sheep and cervids, but not for cattle and bison.
The agency paused its proposed livestock traceability changes in January to re-engage with the industry after facing significant pushback.
The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) said it was pleased with the agency’s announcement.
“CCA remains committed to our support for livestock traceability as a core pillar of disease preparedness, market access and confidence in Canadian beef,” the group said. “CCA and provincial member organizations are in the final stages of convening a Task Force to work for producers on a risk-based, industry-led approach to disease preparedness and emergency management and will be making an announcement soon, pending finalization of the Task Force members.”
The updated requirements for goats, sheep and cervids will bring them in line with requirements similar to cattle and bison.
