The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was set to begin the Callaghan Complex horse gather around July 10 in Lander County, NV.
The BLM plans to reduce the current wild horse population and growth rates within established appropriate management levels (AML).
The estimated population for the Callaghan Complex greatly exceeds the established AML range of 323-552 horses. The complex was most recently surveyed in February 2025 and was determined to have nearly 4,500 adult wild horses within the complex; BLM plans to capture about 2,000 excess horses from within or outside the complex by using the helicopter drive trap.
The complex includes the Callaghan, South Shoshone, Bald Mountain, Hickison (north of US Route 50) herd management areas, and North Shoshone herd area. The gather area encompasses about 1.15 million acres.
“Wild horses are frequently moving on the highway 305 right of way and creating public safety issues,” BLM said.
