Amsterdam, Netherlands, has voted to ban public advertising of meat products, according to multiple news reports.
The measure passed with support from 27 of the 45 members of the Amsterdam Municipal Council and will take effect on May 1. The proposal places Amsterdam alongside other cities in the Netherlands, such as Haarlem and Utrecht, that have adopted similar restrictions. The vote also prohibits advertising for gas-powered vehicles, air travel and cruise vacations as part of broader climate policy goals.
The move follows years of tension over environmental rules, including farmer protests against nitrogen regulations that helped spur the rise of the BoerBurgerBeweging party, or “Farmer-Citizen Movement,” now represented in parliament and the governing coalition.
