Two recent cattle hauler incidents in Idaho and Colorado brought first responders together to contain livestock and manage traffic.
On Aug. 31, an Idaho Transportation Department inspector spotted a cattle hauler on fire near the East Boise Port. The driver escaped, but cattle remained trapped inside. Fire crews opened the trailer, allowing responders to move the animals into a temporary pen away from the interstate.
In Colorado, a cattle hauler carrying 48 head rolled into the median of Interstate 76 east of Brush Sept. 15, sending cattle onto the highway. Ten cattle were killed, 29 survived and nine were initially unaccounted for. Several vehicles struck loose cattle. The truck driver and another motorist suffered minor injuries, while the crash temporarily closed I-76 in both directions.
