A new study from Texas Tech University challenges long-standing assumptions about red meat and obesity.
Published in the journal Obesity, researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 clinical trials, finding no significant effect of unprocessed red meat consumption on weight gain or metabolic health markers, including BMI, body fat, cholesterol and triglycerides.
Lead researcher Nikhil V. Dhurandhar emphasized that previous recommendations were largely based on observational data, which can be unreliable. The study suggests that unprocessed red meat, such as beef, may support satiety and weight management.
Funded by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and the Texas Beef Council, the research was conducted independently.
Dhurandhar encourages future research to inform more effective public health recommendations.
