A group of South Dakota lawmakers re-introduced a bill into the state legislature that would prohibit the manufacture, sale and distribution of any product containing lab-grown meat.
Led by state Rep. John Sjaarda (R-SD-02), House Bill 1057 would impose a ban on lab-grown meat for the next 10 years. Violations of the proposed law would be classified as a Class 2 misdemeanor.
If passed, this would make South Dakota the eighth state to ban lab-grown meat, joining the states of Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska and Texas.
The bill was previously introduced last year but failed to pass the Senate.
