Two California-based cultivated meat companies are filing suit over Texas’ recent law banning lab-grown meat sales in the state for the next two years.
UPSIDE Foods, which produces lab-grown chicken, and Wildtype, which produces lab-grown salmon, accuse the law of being government overreach.
In June, Texas passed Senate Bill 261, which prohibits the sale of cell-cultured protein for human consumption until Sept. 7, 2027. The companies said the law closes the state’s border to an out-of-state industry to protect the state’s agriculture from lawful competition.
The Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association supported the legislation, saying it “reinforces Texas’ commitment to preserving the high standards of the beef industry and the livelihoods of the hardworking Texans who sustain it.”
