In January, a federal judge declined to dismiss a lawsuit brought by cultivated meat groups challenging a state bill that prohibits the sale of cultivated meat in Texas.
The ban is temporary and expires in the fall of 2027 if lawmakers choose not to extend it.
Agriculture groups and leaders condemned the judge’s ruling.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller called it an “assault on Texas ranchers, a gift to Washington elites, and a slap in the face to state sovereignty.”
The Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association said the groups that promote cultivated meat are the first to oppose or challenge laws that require transparency about cell-cultured products. “Any industry that refuses transparency with consumers should not be considered innovative, but rather dishonest,” the group said.
