In late January, the U.S. and Mexico reaffirmed their commitments to resolving water management challenges.
Mexico committed to deliver a minimum of 350,000 acre-feet (an acre-foot is approximately 326,000 gallons) of water per year to the U.S. during the current five-year cycle. The country also committed to a plan to repay all outstanding water debt from the previous cycle.
Under the 1944 Water Treaty, Mexico is obligated to deliver 1.75 million acre-feet of water from the Rio Grande River Basin to the U.S., and in return, the U.S. provides 1.5 million acre-feet of water from the Colorado River. Mexico has fallen behind its commitments in recent years, citing drought conditions and management issues.
