On Wednesday, Nov. 7, U.S. Attorney General (AG) Jeff Sessions resigned his post. He began his resignation letter to President Donald Trump, saying, “At your request, I am submitting my resignation.”
In the letter, he said he was honored to have served in the position. During his press conference on the results of the midterm elections, plus again via Twitter, Trump announced that Matthew Whitaker—current chief of staff for Sessions—will assume the role of Acting Attorney General until a permanent replacement is nominated.
In a Nov. 7 tweet, Trump said Whitaker “will serve our country well.” Congressional Democrats immediately questioned Whitaker as acting AG, given the control the position holds over the ongoing investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Whitaker’s past statements about the investigation.
Several, including New York Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-10), responded to the President’s tweets, demanding that Whitaker not be allowed to supervise Mueller’s investigation.
