A Florida bill that would require managers of state-owned land to consider leasing portions of land for cattle grazing is making its way through the state legislature.
House Bill 1421, Cattle Grazing on State Land, was introduced by Rep. Jon Albert (R-48). The bill would require land managers to consider the feasibility of leasing land to private entities for cattle grazing when a land management plan is developed or updated.
Any suitable lands must be described in the plan and made available for lease. If no land is determined suitable for grazing, the manager must include an explanation in the plan.
The bill currently sits in the House State Affairs Committee. Companion legislation in the Senate was introduced by Sen. Keith Truenow (R-13).
