Colorado State University (CSU) has named livestock facilities at its Fort Collins, CO, research center in honor of longtime cattle nutritionist John Matsushima.
The Dr. John K. Matsushima Livestock Research and Teaching Complex recognizes the 105-year-old professor emeritus, who spent more than 30 years teaching and conducting research at CSU.
Matsushima helped transform cattle feeding by pioneering steam-flaked corn, a process that improves starch digestibility and feed efficiency. He also helped open Japan to U.S. beef exports and taught an estimated 10,000 students during his career.
Matsushima co-founded CSU’s annual Nutrien Ag Day BBQ, which raises money for student scholarships, and recently attended this year’s event on Sept. 12.
