The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is threatening to remove the Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s (CPW) authority to manage and proceed with its wolf reintroduction plans.

Brian Nesvik, USFWS director, penned a letter Dec. 18, 2025, to the CPW, requesting a detailed account of the agency’s wolf management activities, according to a report by the Coloradoan. The letter said that if CPW fails to supply a report within 30 days, USFWS will pursue legal action. Nesvik wrote that CPW was out of compliance with USFWS’ Memorandum of Agreement regarding the release of wolves imported from Canada, and the release of a wolf from a pack with a confirmed history of depredation.

In an X social media post dated Dec. 18, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum wrote, “Colorado is prioritizing WOLVES over American ranchers! In January, they released 15 wolves into the wild with NO warning & recently RE-RELEASED a wolf from a pack known to kill livestock. This is a warning: if Colorado does not get control of the wolves immediately, we will!”
