The USDA recently partnered with federal agencies to determine actions to implement new companion animal oversight.
“Today’s announcement will lay out new standards to improve animal welfare, deploy new training and staff to continuously monitor facilities under our care, and build further public awareness to protect our companion animals,” said Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins Sept. 21 following a roundtable.
The department will put forth a regulatory proposal in 2027 to strengthen Animal Welfare Act standards for dogs, issue regulatory refreshers to dog breeding facilities, deploy the Animal Protection Bureau to identify unlicensed or unauthorized operations, increase inspector general staffing and pursue action against those operating against the Animal Welfare Act.
