Trial date set for Maude family

A trial date has been set for April 29 for ranching couple Charles and Heather Maude of South Dakota.

The Maude family was indicted on June 20, 2024, for theft of government property after the U.S. Forest Service alleged the family placed a fence on federal grassland and used 25 acres for grazing. The Maudes have had an ongoing grazing agreement with the agency for 60 years and said the fence placement has been recognized at each renewal. They contend they were never informed of any rule violations and maintain that they kept their grazing agreements in good standing.

Charles and Heather are being charged separately and each face up to 10 years in prison or a $250,000 fine.

“The fact that the two are indicted separately means they must each retain their own legal counsel—doubling their attorney fees,” read a GoFundMe organized to help the couple.

I would hope with both South and North Dakota Governors moving into the Executive Office in DC that there will be a land management agency, judicial review and relief of the Maud litigation on the 25 acres. How odd that it is over a "FENCE", this whole unfortunate story is bureaucratic and judicial rot, I am giving to the Go Fund Me for this poor family

I think this is a travesty and a waste of tax payer money. These federal people should be replaced and worry about people that actually break the law.

I think DOGE has found some more unnecessary federal employees to remove and see if there positions are deemed needed. How pathetic that this is what the government landed on to go after - 25 acres???? Really? What's really going on? What is on the Maude Ranch that the BLM really wants? Just wondering......

This is definitely a plan to bankrupt the Maudes. This is the Federal government’s way of controlling.

How can we get involved? The more attention, the better. Please post who citizens can contact within the government to voice concern.

Absolutely rediculous clearly this is a scam, I can’t believe our governments have let it get this far! I sure hope we get some sense back in this country! This poor family needs all of our support!

This is ridiculous. This is BIG GOVERNMENT squeezing the little family. They have a LEGAL BINDING FRAZING AGREEMENT THAT HAS RECOGNIZED THE FENCE FOR YEARS AND HAS BEEN RENEWED MULTIPLE TIMES!!! Government do right by this family and recognize the legally binding grazing agreement that you signed. If YOU f'ckd up the fence location on your side of the contract- you complete the current contract and then when up for renewal YOU PAY yo have YOUR SO CALLED FENCE MOVED. That is YOUR MISTAKE NOT ON THIS FAMILY....

I am horrified by this blatant example of government overreach and corruption. This is a victimless crime the government is trying to use as grounds to ruin a family's life. How can we stand for this?
