A report released by the Center for Biological Diversity contends livestock grazing has damaged nearly 60% of the critical habitat for the western yellow-billed cuckoos in Arizona and New Mexico.
“If yellow-billed cuckoos are going to survive, agencies have to start taking their duty to protect the wild places these birds rely on seriously,” said Chris Bugbee, Southwest conservation advocate at the Center. “That starts with keeping cattle out of designated critical habitat.”
The report urges the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to exclude livestock grazing from grazing in designated cuckoo habitat within livestock grazing allotments.
