The Indonesian Halal Authority (BPJPH) has reaccredited the only U.S. halal certifier approved for Indonesia, reopening a key export market that had been closed since March, according to Meat+Poultry.
BPJPH had questioned whether U.S. slaughter practices met Indonesia’s halal standards, suspending accreditation and effectively halting American beef exports worth $93 million in 2024. After the audits resolved those concerns, shipments can now resume.
Cattlemen’s Beef Board CEO Greg Hanes sees a strong opportunity in Indonesia, citing its growing population, rising disposable income, and expanding cold-chain infrastructure, though some non-tariff barriers remain. “Southeast Asia, and especially Indonesia, have tons of opportunity for the U.S. beef industry,” Hanes said.
