FSIS issues Boar’s Head listeria report

USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued its final report detailing the Boar’s Head listeria outbreak in 2024 and oversight of ready-to-eat facilities.

The report details a severe incident involving liverwurst produced at the company’s Virginia facility. The outbreak, which occurred between May and November 2024, resulted in 61 cases across 19 states, leading to 60 hospitalizations and 10 deaths.

Investigations linked the outbreak to inadequate sanitation practices, including product residue, condensation and structural issues. Over 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat products were recalled, and the facility was permanently closed. FSIS emphasized improved regulatory measures, inspector training and long-term policy revisions to prevent future outbreaks.
