The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has amended food additive regulations to permit hydrogen peroxide as a safe antimicrobial, oxidizing and bleaching agent while removing sulfur dioxide from approved use.
This action follows a petition by Cargill. Hydrogen peroxide, already affirmed as generally recognized as safe, must be removed from food during processing to meet safety standards. Any additional uses beyond existing limits require a separate food additive regulation. The order took effect on Sept. 3. Objections can be filed by Oct. 3 at regulations.gov under Docket No. FDA-2022-F-2725.
