National and provincial cattle organizations are using social media to reassure producers concerned about proposed traceability regulations.
According to Canadian Cattlemen, the regulations are not yet in effect and have not been published in the Canada Gazette, Part II, which is expected later this spring. Canadian Cattlemen reported that confusion has emerged from claims that new movement reporting systems are already in place, though the measures are intended to be phased in gradually.
The Canadian Cattle Association said it is working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to align any rules with the industry-led Cattle Implementation Plan. The association warned of widespread misinformation and said no new regulations took effect Jan. 1. Proposed changes would require premises identification numbers for tag purchases and cattle movement reporting.
