Routine brucellosis surveillance has identified an affected cattle herd in Park County, WY.

The Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory confirmed the results, which the National Veterinary Services Laboratory later validated. The herd is now quarantined, with serial testing required for quarantine release. Testing efforts involve herd owners, veterinarians, the Wyoming Livestock Board (WYLB) and USDA personnel.

Brucellosis cases are not uncommon in Wyoming’s Designated Surveillance Area (DSA), where wildlife occasionally transmit the disease to cattle. Surveillance includes mandatory testing before cattle leave the DSA or are transferred to new owners.

WYLB will host two information meetings on Sept. 24 at the Park County Library in Cody and Oct. 3 at the Afton Civic Center in Afton.
