Berkeley, CA, became the first city in the U.S. to ban concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in a city.

Measure DD, Prohibition of Livestock Facilities Measure, was a ballot measure that passed on a 61% “yes” vote. The measure will prohibit new and expanded CAFOs, close existing ones within a year and impose a $10,000 daily fine for violations. There are currently no CAFOs in Berkeley; although Golden Gate Fields technically fit the definition by housing about 1,400 horses, the racetrack was closed this summer following activist pushback.

Direct Action Everywhere and Compassionate Bay were the proponents behind the measure.
