On Feb. 3, the Carson City Board of Supervisors overturned the Planning Commission’s December decision to approve an animal processing facility.
Carson Valley Meats sought to build a processing facility near Centerville, NV, off Highway 50. In a close 3-2 vote after hours of discussion, the board upheld the appeals and overturned the commission’s approval of the slaughterhouse.
According to the Nevada Appeal, supervisors expressed concern about the location, while others stated it could only happen in an industrial zone. Despite objections by residents over the possibility of noise, odor and pollution, Carson Valley Meats argued residents wouldn’t even realize the slaughterhouse was there and that operations would follow USDA humane treatment standards.
Proponents of the processing facility, including 4-H participants and supporters of the farm-to-table movement, spoke after the vote, expressing their disappointment. According to City Manager Nancy Paulson, the Board of Supervisors’ decision is final. Carson Valley Meats will have to appeal to the courts to fight the decision.
