Gallup market research has determined that nearly one in four Americans ate less meat in the past year than before, while 72 percent Americans ate the same amount of meat, and 3 percent never ate meat.

The research was carried out in a September poll and found despite Americans eating less meat, it does not mean vegetarianism is on the rise.

Only 5 percent of Americans consider themselves vegetarian, a statistic that has generally stayed the same for the past 20 years.

Health is the major reason Americans said they would reduce meat consumption, with environmental concerns, food safety, and animal welfare following.

Most Americans that cut back on meat ate smaller portions, and slightly more than a third of Americans opted in for plant-based meat replacements.
