The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is proposing to designate close to 92,000 acres of critical habitat for the San Francisco Bay population of longfin smelt.

The areas up for protection include the California waters of San Pablo Bay, Suisun Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. USFWS listed the population of fish as endangered last July. Comments on the proposed critical habitat designations can be submitted by March 17 at tinyurl.com/2s4byyy8.

The Center for Biological Diversity also petitioned the agency to protect three fish species in the Goose Lake Basin in south central Oregon and northeastern California under the Endangered Species Act. The group said the Goose Lake sucker, Goose Lake lamprey and Goose Lake tui chub are threatened by water diversions, habitat damage from livestock, dams, roads and culverts.
