The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officially announced on Nov. 29 that it would be listing the wolverine as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
The agency also issued an interim rule under Section 4(d) that exempts take related to: research, lawful trapping for other species or forest management activities.
The North American wolverine is a medium-sized carnivore found within the northern Rocky Mountains and north Cascade Mountains.
“Today’s court decision gives this amazing, snow-dependent species a long-overdue lifeline in the face of massive habitat loss due to climate change,” said Bonnie Rice, national wildlife campaign manager for Sierra Club, in response to the decision.
