The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is proposing to update the state listing status of the western gray squirrel from threatened to endangered.
If changed, the new listing status would bring an increased penalty for unlawfully harming or killing the squirrel. WDFW said the listing proposal is based on the information found in a recent periodic status review.
Members of the public may comment on the proposal through Oct. 2. To submit a comment, visit publicinput.com/gray-squirrel, call 855-925-2801 with project code 6483 or send mail to WDFW ATTN: Wildlife Program, PO Box 43200, Olympia, WA 98504.
