Tyson Foods will permanently close its Emporia, KS, beef plant by June 27 after initially planning to cease operations in February, according to local news outlet KVOE.
At the time of the December announcement, the plant employed over 800 workers. While 430 employees remained as of mid-February, only 220 will stay until March 28, with further reductions continuing weekly. According to KVOE, Tyson is offering 200 positions at its Holcomb facility, but affected employees cannot displace others since Emporia lacks a union.
The closure follows previous downsizing moves, including ending cold storage in 2020 and transitioning from cattle slaughter to food processing in 2008.
KVOE said Tyson has not commented on potential buyers or plant upkeep.
