President Donald Trump on June 29 signed an order temporarily suspending certain duties on phosphate fertilizer imports from Morocco.
“The temporary suspension will increase phosphate fertilizer availability, improve competition, and help lower one of agriculture’s largest production expenses while supporting a stable and reliable fertilizer supply ahead of future planting seasons,” USDA said.
Supplies from major Middle Eastern producers have been cut by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
“The United States’ largest foreign source of phosphate fertilizer has experienced supply chain disruption, placing additional pressure on the farm economy and the production of certain categories of domestic food,” Trump wrote in his proclamation.
