University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Sonoma, in partnership with Pepperwood Preserve and Tukman Geospatial, developed the Wildfire Fuel Mapper to assist Sonoma County landowners with the information they need to understand and reduce fire hazards and fuels on their land.
The Wildfire Fuel Mapper provides landowners with greater than 3 acres a downloadable report that summarizes aspects such as vegetation types, height and density; slopes; fuels; and infrastructure within a property parcel or across a local watershed. According to UCCE, the maps could be used to develop a vegetation management plan either through grazing, prescribed burns or a formal management plan for grant funding or cost-share agreements to control the fire load.
The UCCE is currently testing the Wildfire Fuel Mapper in the Lake Sonoma watershed and collecting feedback from both landowners and specialists throughout the region. To access the mapper reports, visit wildfirefuelmapper.org.
