Story Short: New processing plants coming to SD

Two meat processing plants are making their way to Rapid City and Hot Springs, SD.

Kingsbury and Associates and Sirius Realty of Rapid City and Greenville plan to construct an 8,000-head-per-day beef and bison processing facility in Rapid City over three years, according to a report by the Rapid City Journal. This would create the largest beef plant in the country.

“We want to compete with the Big Four meatpacking giants and be that all-important ‘second bidder’ in the cash market,” said Megan Kingsbury, president and managing partner, in a news release.

The facility will utilize and develop technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence for processing, methane capture, using renewable energy sources, recycling water and working on efficient transportation plans.

Dakota Territory Beef, a partner of United Ranchers Cooperative, broke ground on a new 25-head-per-week processing plant in Hot Springs in late May.

The plant will be a local option for ranchers to market their products, and the company plans to pay ranchers a premium of 12 cents over the board for the following Monday for their cattle. The plant is set to be up and running by early next year.
