Story Short: JBS to reduce methane

JBS has partnered with Royal DSM, a global, “purpose-led” company in health, nutrition and bioscience, to implement the goal of reducing enteric methane emissions from cattle on a global scale.

Royal DSM has developed a nutritional supplement called Bovaer, which has the potential of reducing enteric methane by as much as 90 percent. According to Royal DSM, a quarter of a teaspoon per animal per day inhibits the enzyme that activates methane gas production in the stomach of the ruminant. Royal DSM states the effect is immediate, and if use is interrupted, methane emissions resume.

JBS and Royal DSM will implement the use of Bovaer throughout the global supply chain as part of their mission to become net-zero by 2040.
